Traffic jam on one Dhaka route costs Tk273b yearly

The annual loss due to traffic congestion in only one city route, Airport-Postogola, is estimated at Tk 272.60 billion, giving an indication about how the problem is costing the country’s economy.     The estimate of loss was measured in a study by BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) as it made the report public at the capital’s BRAC Centre Inn auditorium Tuesday.   The losses were calculated by converting the economic value of lost man-hours and cost of additional fuel consumed by motor vehicles due to traffic congestion. Traffic congestion in the capital incurs a loss of Tk 2.27 billion(227.20 crore) in a month of city dwellers, said the study report Tuesday. The loss includes Tk 2.04 billion for waste of time and Tk 231.0 million for fuel burn of vehicles from Airport to Postogola route, said the report. About 90 per cent of the cost was due to time loss and other 10 per cent for additional vehicle cost which mostly in additional fuel consumption. Lack of co-ordination among government organizations and haphazard public transport system which includes lack of provision for pedestrians and poor maintenance and management of footways are the root cause of traffic congestion in Dhaka city, the study reports detailed.-Asfar
